Poles Apart – Trans Am Totem

Totem Am Totem is a public art installation created by Vancouver sculptor Marcus Bowcott for the Vancouver Biennale using 5 abandoned cars and a cedar tree stump. Bowcott uses the crumbling cars as a reference to our dominant consumer culture: mass produced consumer goods are cheap and readily disposed of. In today’s binge-consuming and wasteful culture, we become oblivious to the damage we inflict on the environment. Shouldn’t we pause for a moment and reflect on our unsustainable production and consumption? The Trans Am Totem reminds us our responsibility to the planet and to future generations.
